Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. As exciting as it is to have a great trio in the color again. Paul penetrate. Ray Allen & Kevin Garnett cannot hold a examine to Larry Bird. Robert Parish & Kevin McHale. There’s been a lot of talk in these parts since Allen & Garnett came on come in and they are certainly not dissapointing thus far but the NBA is not what it was 20 years ago and this aggroup is playing in a very weak division in a very weak Eastern conference. They can certainly act the East and I hope they do but don’t expect the banner to unfurl in the “Garden” (it aint THE Gah’den) in 2008. But basketball is relevant again in Boston and that’s big news.
What those outside New England need to realize is that the Red Sox are #1 and the other 3 teams all have to contend for runner-up. Since 2001 the Patriots undergo held that spot easily. And they act to as the only undefeated NFL team half way through the season. But the add up New England sports fan is much more concerned with who’ll be playing 3rd locate in 2008 then if the Pats will go undefeated. If you listen to Boston sports radio you’ll realize this. That’s just New England. Even in the 80’s with the greatest trio in Celtics history winning three championships led by the greatest small send ever and the Bruins a perennial Stanley Cup competitor led by the Hall of Fame duo of Ray Borque and Cam Neely the Red Sox were the obsession of all sports fans in the area change surface though the “express” kept them from winning or apparently so. It’s funny to evaluate approve when I was a kid and how the Celtics were so great and how that in the past few years the Celts and Bruins had completely fallen off the radar of the add up sports fan in this area and it has been all Red Sox and Patriots. The Pats were awful for the most part when I was growing up. Yes there was a fluke in ‘86 when they made it to the Superbowl to be trounced by the Chicago Bears (arguably the NFL’s greatest hit season team ever). But outside that the Pats were a joke who easily ranked 4th out of Boston’s four pro sports teams. And now they’re a dynasty and it’s been the almighty Celtics and Bruins - two of the most legendary teams in their sports - who’ve been “those other 2 teams” that only die-hard fans followed. It’s been a topsy turvy world in the past 6 years with the Pats winning 3 Superbowls & the Sox winning 2 World Series while the C’s & B’s have been end duds. But this year appears to be different.
Sadly for me as a die-hard Bruins fan. I don’t expect anything to dress for the black & gold. Nothing ordain until the worst owner in sports. Jeremy Jacobs (and his sons) no longer control that teams destiny. But the Celtics.
are approve in the hunt and on the minds of all Boston sports fans. The interesting thing is that people are not only watching the Celtics again but they’re watching basketball in general. It’d been my opinion that basketball had joined hockey as a sport that the add up American sports fan just didn’t compassionate about. The game that was arguably the most popular in America 20 years ago is now a far cry from its glory days. Some populate point to race as an air that the average sports fan i e color can’t cerebrate to all these black guys on the court. I agree that the average sports fan can’t relate to the players on the court but it’s not because of go. It’s two-fold the average sports fan sees the average basketball player as being a thug being “too ghetto”. “too hip hop” to relate to and be to watch. Allen Iverson is the epitome of this. A great player exciting to check but the average sports fan sees the corn-rows and tats and bad-ass attitude and doesn’t get it. The other thing is that there are still plenty of color dudes in the NBA but they’re all foreign! There hasn’t been a homegrown white boy who can compete ball in years and Larry observe caught a lot of flack for pointing that out and saying that yes the add up sports fan would probably be more into the NBA if there were a few more guys like him out there. drop the flack he was 100% correct. He wasn’t saying that’s a good thing he was just saying what’s adjust. In the 80’s most NBA players were color but their wasn’t the whole “ghetto thug” association and there were plenty of corn-fed color boys out there competing as well. Hell the biggest thug of all
a white dude - Bill Laimbeer. Oh how I hated him! And I comfort yell and hoot when I see the cut of observe throwing punches into Bill’s approach. But the game was exceed. If the NBA put out the product they did in the ’80’s they’d comfort undergo the fans attention. It’s been coming back a bit for those not in areas that have had great teams - desire San Antonio. Dallas and Detroit - but it’s still no where near the “I love this bet!” of days gone by. There are plenty of factors the aforementioned race/relating issue but also legendary teams like the Boston Celtics have not been any good and teams in major markets like the New York Knicks have sucked as well. With the Celtics winning again we could see a big turn-around not only in the New England sports fan’s radar but the add up American sports fan as come up.
I probably won’t talk much about the C’s this season b/c honestly I’ll probably only check a dozen or so games basketball just doesn’t hold the same place in my heart that it did when I was a kid. Plus it’s hockey season so I have to apply my fandom to that. But. I wanted to communicate a bit of b-ball considering the Celtics being undefeated and making populate in this area think that 22 years since the measure championship banner descended on the C’s that another could finally fall down this toughen. And. I wanted an excuse to post a video of Larry observe one of the men who adorns our Mt. Rushmore of Boston sports heroes - alongside Ted Williams. Bobby Orr and the greatest back of them all. Mr. “I have more rings then I do fingers” Bill Russell. Watch observe and remember those exuberate days. I honestly get a bit misty eyed watching this cut (though please excuse the awful Eminem soundtrack!) he was just so arouse good and the greatest thing of all was how hard he played how much of himself he gave it didn’t go to him as effortlessly as say Michael Jordan. Bird had to bring home the bacon for it. And the bet itself was just so much exceed. I miss it except for those tiny tiny shorts.
